I love Instagram. It's a love affair that began before I even had a smart phone (I was super late to the smart phone world), and I was using the app from my Ipod Touch. The pictures were grainy, every post had to have a super dope border and noticeable filter. I didn't know what a hashtag was used for...
Flash forward to now. Instagram and now Facebook have actually become very important to my business and growing my Spindles brand. I've connected with some truly great people through Instagram, and I think it's incredible that we can connect with people all over the world with this simple app on our phones.
But social media can be detrimental as well. I'm sure we've all read, talked, and thought about the repercussions of this online world, so I won't bore you with all those details. I do, however, want to share my recent experience and why I feel it necessary to take a bit of a break.
Simply put, it's become a bit overwhelming for me. I've found myself getting sucked into a world of everyone showcasing their absolute best work, and it's really easy to start comparing your "behind the scenes" to someone's "highlight reel". Most of the time, I find myself really inspired by these images, and feel like it opens my mind to new ideas and new possibilities. That's a positive thing! But recently I've let those same images make me feel a bit deflated and I've stopped appreciating the wonderful journey I'm on with myself and with Spindles. I'm not typically one to compare myself to others, to have constant negative self-talk, but honestly that's what has been happening lately. It's made me feel lesser-than, and I'm realizing how I'm allowing this intangible thing called "social media" to steal my power. And frankly, I've been spending too much of what little free time I have looking down at this small screen, instead of looking up and just living life. I need this time to reevaluate, readjust, and refocus on what matters.
I will still be posting almost daily, but I will not be active on the app, so please excuse my silence. If you need to reach out to me, please feel free to email me! Since I won't be checking my Instagram, I don't want to miss any of your messages :)
